Mumbai: The race for the Ranji Trophy (Super League) semifinal berths has hotted up after the conclusion of the fifth round of matches in the seven-round league stage of the National cricket championship. The fifth round saw Group ‘A’ leader Maharashtra slipping down the ladder after losing to Delhi resulting in the latter taking the lead. Maharashtra, holder Mumbai and Saurashtra were trailing by two points, going into the sixth round starting on December 17. Delhi defeated Maharashtra by seven wickets at Nagothane; Mumbai scored a heart-stopping last-ball win over Rajasthan at Jhalawer while Saurashtra scored a thrilling three-run win over Karnataka at Mysore. Tamil Nadu, on 12 points, is in fifth place.
The points position (after fifth round): Group A: Delhi (17 points), Maharashtra, Mumbai and Saurashtra (15); Tamil Nadu (12); Karnataka (nine); Himachal Pradesh (four) and Rajasthan (three). Group B: Baroda (17), Hyderabad and Orissa (10), Andhra (9); Bengal, Punjab and UP (8). Sixth round (Dec. 17-20): Group A: Himachal Pradesh v Mumbai in Dharamsala; Karnataka v Delhi in Karnataka; Tamil Nadu v Rajasthan in TN; Maharashtra v Saurashtra at Nagothane. Group B: Punjab v Orissa in Punjab; Andhra v Baroda in Andhra; Bengal v UP in Bengal. — PTI
