Susan Joy sails past Mercy Mathew’s record

KOCHI: Two years ago she failed to figure among the medals in the 100m and long jump at the university meet. And last year, when she found a place in the university long jump team, she fouled all her three jumps at the National varsities championship.

But on Thursday, everything turned out perfectly for Susan K. Joy at the Mahatma Gandhi University athletics championship. The 19-year-old from Assumption College went past former Asian star Mercy Mathew’s 28-year-old national varsities long jump record and a few minutes later, emerged the fastest woman of the meet at the Maharaja’s College Stadium.

Celebration time

Susan had a lot to celebrate. For, she was sailing past the six-metre barrier for the first time in her life.

“I don’t know how it happened. I’ve not changed my technique in any way but I must say I’ve been having heavier and harder workouts,” said Susan, who is being trained by Unnikrishnan Menon.

MG University is the varsities national champion in athletics and expectedly, there were some high-quality performances. National star K.M. Mohammed Naseem, of Kothamangalam’s Mar Athanasius College, equalled the all-India varsities record in the men’s 400m, while N.D.Tintu, also from the same college, broke the women’s high jump meet mark.

Nibu rewrites record

St. Berchman’s Nibu T. Ninan set the day’s other record, erasing the two-year mark in the men’s shot put.

The Sports Minister, M. Vijayakumar, inaugurated the championship.

The results: Men: 100m: 1. Dibin Eldhose (MAC, 10.9s); 2. Jiby Peter (St. Thomas, 10.96); 3. Santhosh Thevan (MAC, 11.18).

400m: 1. K.M. Mohammed Naseem (MAC, 47.1s); 2. Mohammed Anees (St. Dominic’s, Kanjirapally, 49.07); 3. T.C. Abdul Rafeeque (St. Berchman’s, 49.31).

1,500m: 1. C.J. Jomet (MAC, 3:59.11s); 2. Bibin Baby (St. Thomas, 4:00s); 3. Sheymon Joseph (SB, 4:00).

5,000m: 1. T. Mohamed Ali (MAC, 16:5.5s); 2. K.S. Ranjith (SB, 16:20.4); 3. Shijo Thankachan (St. Thomas, 16:38.3).

Long jump: 1. Anoop Thomas (MAC, 7.18m); 2. Bineesh Jacob (St. Thomas, 7.10); 3. Joseph Saneesh (MAC, 6.96).

High jump: 1. Saiju Simon (St. Thomas, 1.96m); 2. T.D. Pradeepkumar (St. Dominic’s, 1.93); 3. V.P. Jijo (St. Thomas, 1.90).

Shot put: 1. Nibu T. Ninan (SB, 13.60m, NMR, OR: Sam Varghese, SB, 13.28, 2005); 2. Bibin Thomas (St. Thomas, 12.68); 3. Jestin Jose (MAC, 12.05).

20-km walk: 1. S. Sreejith (St. Thomas, 2:2:17.9s); 2. P.C. Sanoop (St. Domnic’s, 2:3:26.1); 3. Ginesh Padmanabhan (MAC, 2:14:26.3).

Women: 100m: 1. Susan K. Joy (Assumption, 12.4s); 2. Selin K. John (Assumption, 12.62); 3. Rudy Raj (Alphonsa, 12.77).

400m: 1. Sini Jose (Alphonsa, 56.69s); 2. Tiana Mary Thomas (MAC, 57.71s); 3. Soumya Jacob (MAC, 57.87).
