Montgomerie for Johnnie Walker Classic

NEW DELHI: Scottish legend Colin Montgomerie, who won the World Cup of golf with Marc Warren in China last month, will be one of big draws of the Johnnie Walker Classic 2008 golf tournament to be held at the DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurgaon near here from February 28 to March 2.

Montgomerie will have for company England’s Lee Westwood and Nick Dougherty, former World No. 1 Vijay Singh, 2005 Johnnie Walker Classic winner Adam Scot of Australia and Indian star Jeev Milkha Singh when the 17th edition of the championship tees of.

The tournament offers prize money of $2.6 million, approximately Rs. 10 crore, the highest for any golf event in India.

Briton Ian Poulter, who recently won the Dunlop Phoenix Open in Japan, is the other high-ranking player who has signed for the tournament, which has been sanctioned by the European Tour, Asian Tour, Australian Tour and the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI).

Something special

Speaking at the launch of the tournament, Jeev Milkha Singh said he would strive to become the first Asian to win a Johnnie Walker Classic Trophy.

“I have played in the Johnnie Walker Classic a number of times across the world but the 2008 event would be something really special.

“It is going to be held in my country for the first time and no Asian has won it ever and I can assure you that I would put in all my efforts,” Jeev said.

The field will comprise 132 professionals, with 47 each from the European and Asian Tours, 22 from Australia, eight from the PGTI and eight would be sponsors’ invitees.
