MANGALORE: More than 15,000 of the 40,000-odd people working in 5,626 gram panchayats of the State will go on an indefinite strike in Bangalore from December 18. K. Yadav Shetty, president of Karnataka Rajya Gram Panchayat Naukarara Sangha, affiliated to Centre of Indian Trade Unions, told presspersons here on Thursday that the sangha would press for its six-point charter of demands. r. Shetty said the office-bearers of the sangha had met C.M. Udasi when he was the Minister for Panchayati Raj and Rural Development in the Janata Dal (Secular)-Bharatiya Janata Party Government five times and appraised him of their demands. “There was no follow up action on part of the Government or the Minister,” he charged. Successive governments had treated panchayat employees poorly. “Employees of taluk and zilla panchayats are treated as permanent staff. But the Government is dilly-dallying on the issue of according same status to us. The Government has not implemented the March 2006 order on payment of minimum wages of Rs. 1,891 to these employees”.
