End in sight for water woes

Staff Reporter

Augmentation project to be finished in a year

KOCHI: The water augmentation project for Thripunithura and nearby panchayats of Thiruvankulam, Chottanikkara and some parts of Udayamperoor from Choondi treatment plant is set for completion in a year. This project will meet the water needs of these areas and also save about 4.5 to 5 million litres a day (mld) of water that the Kerala Water Authority is pumping from the Thammanam pump house for Thripunithura. The Choondi project, with a capacity of 46 mld, was launched in 2005 at a cost of Rs. 48 crores.

35 per cent over

About 35 per cent of the work on the plant, that will treat waters from the Muvattupuzha river, was over, said Susan Jacob, Chief Engineer, Central Region, KWA.

Storage tanks and pumps at a few more places needed to be built for which contracts had been given. The pipes required for augmenting the distribution network had also been ordered, she said. The damaged pipes would be changed simultaneously. Inadequate size of the pipes was one of the main problems in water distribution, said Ms. Jacob.
