NEW DELHI: To bring in a more hands-on feel to the subject, the Mathematics course offered at the undergraduate level at Delhi University is currently in the process of undergoing a change. If approved by all the necessary bodies, students will get to study a revised B. Sc. (Honours) Mathematics programme from July 2008. A committee comprising members from various colleges and the University has been set up to modify the course -- that has not been revised for last so many years -- to the tune of these times. “The new programme will have a more hands-on approach. It will be associated with the real world and we are hoping to include aspects of mathematical modelling in the subject,” said South Campus Director Dinesh Singh who also heads the Committee. “The Committee has more or less agreed to these basic ideas. Basically, the idea is that Maths will be used in understanding real world things. There will also be stress on computational aspects of Maths. We can use computers to gain access to areas inside Maths and Mathematical truths. This part will be one of the key things in the revised course,” he added. However, the core areas of the subject will be retained in the course albeit with lots of illustrations and real-life situations and examples, Prof. Singh maintained. The Committee is getting a rough idea of the first cut of the revised curriculum which will be taken up by the Academic Council for its approval after March next year.
