NASVI seeks implementation of national policy for street vendors

Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE: The National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI) has demanded that the national policy for street vendors be implemented in all States. It has urged the States which are yet to implement the policy, to draw their policies immediately and take steps to implement them. At present, NASVI has 314 member organisations and about two lakh members. Arbind Singh, coordinator of NASVI, who held a meeting of the office-bearers and members of street vendors association here on Wednesday, told presspersons on Thursday that efforts of NASVI in recent years had led to increased visibility of the issues affecting street vendors. The move by State governments to adopt a national policy had resulted in some major issues of street vendors being resolved, he said. “States such as Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Delhi have adopted the national policy. Vendors are an essential part of urban life and they cannot be wished away. Instead, the civic bodies should regulate the activities of street vendors and issue them licenses and ensure that they have a secured livelihood without fear or harassment from anyone,” he said.
