DANGEROUS SHORTCUT: It is not uncommon to find two-wheeler riders squeezing through when the gates at level crossing in Chromepet remain closed. TAMBARAM: Residents of Chromepet and councillors of Pallavaram Municipality have urged Southern Railway and State Highways Department to replace a railway level crossing with a subway. It has become an ordeal for pedestrians, two-wheeler riders and motorists to negotiate the level crossing (LC no. 26) leading to S.D.N.B. Vaishnav Women’s College and other interior areas of Chromepet, including Nemilichery. Motorists on Grand Southern Trunk Road going towards Rajiv Gandhi Salai (formerly Old Mamallapuram Road) have to pass the level crossing to reach Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road. Problems start around 8 a.m. and it is not until 10 a.m. that congestion eases partly. Gates at the level crossing remain closed for a long time due to the frequency of electric trains between Tambaram and Chennai Beach crossing this point. And once the gates open, vehicles get stuck in the middle. This results in electric trains getting detained until the gates are closed again. On Thursday morning, electric trains to Tambaram were delayed for about 15 minutes. Heavy trafficCitizens groups in Chromepet met Union Minister of State for Railways R.Velu sometime ago, to highlight the problems faced by people in this spot. A survey conducted in April 2005 revealed that the level crossing witnessed a traffic of 30,98,760 Train Vehicle Units a day. Residents pointed out that work on a vehicular subway at the adjacent Radha Nagar level crossing (LC No. 27) was a non-starter even five months after it was announced. And work on the road over bridge to connect GST Road with Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road was dragging. The residents said the pending works were causing immense hardship. Members of civic groups have urged Southern Railway to conduct a face-to-face meeting so that people could discuss certain important projects. Such meetings were organised by many of the State government departments. Pallavaram Municipality officials said they had nothing to do with the project except hand over their land if necessary. Officials of the State Highways Department said there was a proposal to replace the level crossing with a vehicular subway and that it would be executed entirely by Southern Railway. Work on it would commence only after the road over bridge linking GST Road with the Radial Road was completed, they said.
