CBI books PSU official in wealth case

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has charged a top public sector company official in Kochi with amassing wealth beyond his known sources of income.

The agency has filed a charge sheet in the CBI special court accusing J. Gopal, former general manager and executive director of Hindustan Organic Chemicals Ltd. (Kochi unit), of amassing Rs.1.5 crore disproportionate to his legitimate sources of income.

30 bank accounts

The CBI submitted before the court that the suspect official operated 30 bank accounts and much of the allegedly ill-gotten money was invested in the form of National Savings Certificates, fixed deposits and monthly income schemes. The CBI had earlier investigated J. Gopal in connection with a chemical import scam. T. Vikram, SP, CBI, headed the investigation in the case.
