Kochi: The Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC) on Thursday decided to strongly resist any attempt to interfere with the Constitutional rights of the minorities. The decision was taken at a three-day meeting of the KCBC, Stephen Alathara, KCBC deputy secretary, said. “The council is ready for discussion with the government, but it must be based on democratic principles and on the Constitution,” he told reporters. Clearing ‘confusion’The KCBC also decided to solve the confusion over “atheism and belief in God,” he said, adding “there is no confusion as far as Churches were concerned. Church is a congregation of believers in God.” It was decided to issue pastoral letters, which will be read out in all Catholic churches during a Sunday in February to clear the cloud on the issue, he said. Thirty-three bishops from 29 dioceses belonging to the Syro-Malabar, Syro-Malankara, and the Latin Catholic Churches participated in the meeting. A three-member Bishop committee was given the responsibility for modifying the KCBC constitution, he said. Abraham Pullattukunnel, founder of Cherupushpam Mission League, was chosen for the ‘Kerala Sabha Ratnam’ award for his contribution to the people and the Church, he said. — PTI
