BANGALORE: Officials of the CID Forest Cell, Bangalore, on Thursday raided the houses of a leading forest contractor in Hubli and Haliyal in Uttara Kannada district and seized a large number of tiger, leopard and river otter skins. Inspector-General of Police (Forest Cell) K.S.N. Chikkerur told The Hindu here that simultaneous raids were conducted on the Haliyal and Old Hubli residences of contractor Prabhakar Gajakosh (50). The police have arrested Prabhakar, a resident of Haliyal town. The raid parties seized one tiger skin, 20 leopard skins and 40 river otter skins from the two houses. Mr. Chikkerur put the notional value of a tiger skin at Rs. 2 lakh, of a leopard skin at Rs. 90,000 each and that of otter skin at Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 30,000 per piece. Prabhakar was under the surveillance of the CID Forest Cell for the past 18 months. He had contacts with several wildlife traders in north and south India, Mr. Chikkerur said.
