Flags off yatra christened “Uniting Hearts” at Gandhi Mandapam


CHENNAI: Voluntary organisations should ensure that there are no school dropouts and create an awareness on the importance of education among the parents and the children of the underprivileged in particular, the Tamil Nadu Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, said here on Thursday.

Inaugurating the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations of the Harijan Sevak Sangh, founded by Mahatma Gandhi, the Governor urged voluntary organisations to take the responsibility of building in the hearts of the youth the spirit of oneness, harmony and brotherhood.

The Governor said he was confident that concerted efforts by everyone could bring about a radical change in the life of the poor and downtrodden. Mr. Barnala also lit a torch to mark the occasion and released an informative folder to commemorate the platinum jubilee.

The Union Minister of State for Textiles, E.V.K.S. Elangovan, appealed to the large number of student community who were present on the occasion to shun violence in any form and put up a stiff fight to weed out terrorism.

The Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan, appealed to the younger generation to imbibe the lofty ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and strive hard to protect human values in life.

President, All India Harijan Sevak Sangh and MP, Nirmala Deshpande, wanted the youth to take up the challenge of eradicating untouchability and establish classless and casteless society.

The Chairman of the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations Committee, S. Pandian, said there was a ray of hope that the country was in the safe hands of the present day younger generation since they are the future torch bearers of the nation.

The Chairman, Vahan Yatra Committee, K.A. Manoharan and R. Srinivasan, State Secretary of Tamil Nadu Harijan Sevak Sangh, spoke.

Later, the Governor accompanied by Mrs. Deshpande flagged off a Yatra christened “Uniting Hearts” at Gandhi Mandapam.
