BANGALORE: “When the parents of my mother-in-law Chandramati N. Urs bought an onion pink georgette Mysore silk sari for her wedding in 1948, little did they know about its value in future. They had bought it for Rs. 140 then and now it has won the first prize in the Vintage Mysore Silk Zari Sari contest,” said an overwhelmed Manonmani N. Urs.

“My mother-in-law gave this sari to me at my wedding in 1990 after wearing it 12 times. Since then I have worn it at least eight times. I have preserved the sari like a treasure and have not washed or dry cleaned it even once,” she said.

Similarly, Shakuntala Acharya, who won the second prize, said she bought the Royal Blue pure Mysore Silk sari in 1949 for Rs. 140. “I preserve the sari by wrapping it in a white cloth and keeping naphthalene balls in the wardrobe,” she said.

Usha Bapat bagged the third prize for her maroon pure Mysore Silk sari bought in 1950.

These winners were given cash prizes of Rs 20,000, Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 10,000 at a function on Thursday. The vintage sari contest organised by the Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation (KSIC) was held from December 2 to 9. The participants were to deliver their saris at KSIC’s Gandhi Bazaar and jubilee showrooms in Bangalore and at the factory premises showroom in Mysore.

Addressing presspersons here, KSIC Chairman P. Vijayan said 535 saris were received for the contest. A four-member committee scrutinised the saris. Apart from the first three prizes, owners of 50 saris would get consolation prizes, he said.
