Arudhra festival begins today

MAYILADUTURAI: The 10-day Arudhra Darshan festival of Lord Nataraja at Panchavateeswara temple at Ananda Thandavapuram village, near Mayiladuturai, in Nagapattinam district will begin on Saturday.

According to V. Swaminathan, secretary of the temple, there will be special poojas for Lord Nataraja and the deity’s holy dip in Amirdhabinthu Theertham will be performed daily. On Arudhra Darshan day, the main event that falls on Thiruvadirai star on December 24, the deity will be taken out in a procession.

Mr. Swaminathan said Ananda Maamuni saint lived in the village about eight centuries ago. He went to the temple on foot every day to worship Lord Nataraja. On a stormy day, the saint could not go to the temple as usual and prayed to the deity, who is said to have appeared before him.Since then the place came to be known as Ananda Thandavapuram. Earlier, it was called Kancharu as Mana Kanchara Nayanar, one of the 63 Nayanmars, hailed from there.
