ADILABAD: There being no deaths due to fevers in the agency areas in Adilabad district during the last four days and the decreasing number of out patients at the primary health centres (PHC) concerned marked a downward trend in the troublesome situation, said Collector Ahmad Nadeem. He said all out efforts by all departments concerned in the last few weeks resulted in bringing the problem under control. Malaria casesAt a press conference here on Friday, the Collector said 156 persons had died in the agency areas because of different reasons including vector-borne diseases. 421 persons in all tested positive for malaria since fever surveillance was taken up from November 20. He said the deaths of a few children in the five mandals of Narnoor, Sirpur (U), Jainoor, Utnoor and Indervelli mandals could have been due to malaria because they had tested positive for it. Mr. Nadeem said the fifth round of fever surveillance slated to begin on Sunday will also be an exercise to crosscheck on the number of deaths that had taken place during the crisis situation. He was answering to a question related to disparity in number of deaths. Listing out the measures taken to control factors that actually worsened the situation, the Collector said community kitchens were opened at 32 habitations that were worst hit by the fevers. This was besides the food basket given to over 32,000 tribal households where malnutrition had compounded the problem. Shifted to hospitalsAs many as 338 serious and semi serious cases of fever were treated at different hospitals including the headquarters hospital at Adilabad. Eight of these cases were referred to hospitals at Hyderabad and Yavatmal in Maharashtra, he added. A sum of over Rs. 38 lakhs was already spent on various measures undertaken to control the situation, Mr. Nadeem said quoting figures. The figure included expenditure on medicines amounting to over Rs. 13 lakhs.
