“Mr. Narayanasamy is one of the leaders who opposed the autonomy move in the beginning” PUDUCHERRY: The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) Staff Struggle Committee on Friday took exception to All India Congress Committee general secretary V. Narayanasamy’s remarks against those who opposed the move to convert the institute into an autonomous body. General secretary of the committee R. Arochiam Kalaimathy told reporters here that Mr. Narayanasamy was one of the leaders who opposed the autonomy move in the beginning. He said the Congress leader had also promised to extend help to the staff when they went on a strike in September 2006. Mr. Narayanasamy owed an explanation on his “volte-face” on the autonomy issue, he said, adding that the committee was prepared for a public debate in this regard. Responding to the Congress leader’s remark that the Bill was brought to make JIPMER an institute of national importance, Mr. Kalaimathy said it could have been done by sanctioning more funds and giving more administrative powers. “There was no need to convert the institute into an autonomous body to achieve this,” he said. The Union Health Ministry should have taken steps to fill vacancies and create more facilities in JIPMER, he added. Stating that they would continue their agitation if the government failed to concede their demands, he said the Committee would hold a protest demonstration in front of the Head Post Office on Saturday.
