NABARD conducts gender sensitisation programme

Staff Reporter

PUDUCHERRY: Various schemes announced by the public sector banks, especially those packaged for women, were discussed at the gender sensitisation meet held by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) here on Friday.

Assistant General Manager of NABARD’s Puducherry unit R. Muralidharan advised bankers and financial agencies to bridge the gap between the demand, supply of credit and other services to women. While implementing various schemes, the banks should understand the fact that rural women continued to rely on money lenders to meet their credit needs, he said.

Mr. Muralidharan said the problem faced by women to find access to institutional credit was largely due to restricted mobility, illiteracy, low social status and lack of security or collaterals.

He also suggested establishment of a Women Development Cell for preparation of credit plan. The banks should also conduct gender sensitisation programme for the staff, besides identifying women-specific credit and savings product, he said.

Chairperson of Pondicherry State Women’s Commission Kamilini, Chief Regional Manager of Indian Overseas Bank Geeta P. Shetti, Lead District Manager J. Chandrasekaran and Director of Women and Child Welfare Chand Sultana and research scholar from Australia Malini addressed the meeting.
