New techniques: The Minister for Animal Husbandry, P.Geetha Jeevan, inaugurating the training programme in Tuticorin on Friday. Tuticorin: The Minister for Animal Husbandry, P. Geetha Jeevan, inaugurated a two-month long skill development training organised by the Department of Labour and Employment for palmyrah and handicraft workers at a project cost of Rs.3 lakh, here on Friday. Official sources said that a total of 200 women from the district who had registered themselves with the Tamil Nadu Palm Tree Workers Welfare Board and Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Workers Welfare Board, would be trained in 10 batches. Resource persons from Vellore and Tuticorin districts would teach the participants of the programme to make various products like baskets, plates, dolls and decorative items using palm leaves. Training venueThe training would be conducted on the Manapad Women Workers Palm Leaf Industrial Co-operative Society premises. Welfare assistanceThe Minister for Animal Husbandry also gave away welfare assistance to the tune of Rs.66,000 to 11 women who were the members of various welfare boards set up in the State for manual workers, hair dressers, palm tree workers, tailors and handicrafts workers. The Collector, R. Palaniyandi, the Commissioner of Labour, A. Sukumaran, the Chairman of Tamil Nadu Palm Tree Workers Welfare Board, Kumari Ananthan, and the Inspector of Labour P. Elias, were also present.
