The decision was taken after a voting process was held in Udupi Chitradurga: The announcement that Chitradurga will host the 75th Akhil Bharata Kannada Sahitya Sammelan has enlivened people in the district, especially those from the literary community. A decision to this effect was taken after a voting process was held in Udupi, where the 74th sammelan is under way. Voting had to take place as Chitradurga and Bellary were vying for the privilege. Chitradurga secured 16 votes as against 14 of Bellary, said president of the district Kannada Sahitya Parishat K.N. Veeresh. Mr. Veeresh, who was in Udupi to attend the function, told The Hindu over telephone that he was extremely happy at the decision and thanked those who had voted for Chitradurga. “We are extremely happy that the historical city of Chitradurga will get a chance to host such a prestigious event. We will make all arrangements for its successful conduct,” he said. ApprehensionsKannada Sahitya Academy Award recipient Raghavendra Patil, though happy over the decision, expressed apprehension over the quality of the event to be held here. “Since the district Kannada Sahitya Parishat has not been too active here, the parishat has to work doubly hard to ensure its success,” he said. Historian B. Rajashekharappa said that the sammelan should have been held in Chitradurga long ago. “Nevertheless, I am happy that at least this time, a decision has been taken in its favour. I am sure people, including the local maths and elected representatives will extend support in this regard,” he said. Poet Chandrashekhar Tallya expressed happiness over the decision, but said that the programmes should be made more meaningful. In a press statement, Shivamurthy Murugharajendra Swami of the Murugha Math, has promised all possible help for the event.
