Mallikarjun Kharge will lead the party in the elections ‘It will be a direct fight between Congress and BJP’ GULBARGA: The former Minister and member of All-India Congress Committee (AICC) B.G. Puttaswamy Gowda on Friday reiterated that there was no proposal to change the leadership of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee at this time. KPCC president Mallikarjun Kharge would lead the party in the ensuing mid-term elections to the State Assembly, he added. Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Gowda, who had been appointed as the observer of the Gulbarga district for the ensuing Assembly elections and also to ensure the success of the “Janarinda Janarigagi Jananodolana” programme in Gulbarga district scheduled on December 18, termed the reports appearing in a section of the press and electronic media about the possible change of the leadership of the KPCC president as speculative and had no basis. Mr. Gowda said that the party was growing in strength and had become a formidable force under the leadership of Mr. Kharge. To a question whether Mr. Kharge would be the automatic choice for the post of the Chief Minister in case the party got a majority in the elections, Mr. Gowda said that no decision had been taken on projecting anybody as Chief Minister and it was for the party’s leadership to decide on this. He said that it would be a direct fight between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the elections and the party was confident of winning the majority . He said that the Janata Dal (S) leaders who exhibited hunger for power by going back on their own words and sworn affidavit submitted before Governor Rameshwar Thakur and President Pratibha Patil of supporting the BJP to form the Government, had no moral right to go before the people to seek votes. Mr. Gowda said that the claim of the BJP leaders that there was a sympathy wave in their favour was false and by making these statements repeatedly, the BJP leaders wanted to create a wave which was not visible anywhere in the State. The BJP would also be taught a fitting lesson by the electorate for knocking at the doors of the Janata Dal (S) for the sake of power. The former Minister Qamar-ul-Islam and DCC president Allamprabhu Patil were present.
