Remove statues in public places: PIL

Staff Reporter

Next hearing by Bench on December 17

MADURAI: A public interest litigation petition has been filed before the Madras High Court Bench here insisting on the removal of statues installed in public places causing hindrance to free flow of traffic.

A Division Bench comprising Justice F.M. Ibrahim Kalifulla and Justice S. Palanivelu directed the Special Government Pleader R. Janakiramulu to take notice and posted the matter to December 17.

In its affidavit, Tamil Thanghi (Munnetra Podhunala) Sangam recalled that the State Government had constituted the Gomathinayagam Commission and Justice Mohan Commission pursuant to the caste clashes in southern districts in 1990s.

Commissions’ ban on installation

Both the commissions recommended imposing a ban on installing new statues and shifting of existing to statues to museums or temples.

However, their recommendations were yet to be implemented, the petitioner association claimed and pointed out that several violent incidents had taken place owing to damaging such statues by rival groups.

Besides, the valuable time of the police force was being spent on protecting the statues which also distracts the attention of motorists.
