BHUBANESWAR: The police on Friday picked up five persons in connection with the gangrape of a 17-year-old girl near Raj Bhawan recently. Another accused person was still at large. The accused persons, who are in their thirties, were mainly unemployed youths. They were identified as Tukudev Beura, Basant Kumar Swain, Padma Charan Nayak, Guru Charan Hansda and Simanchal Nayak. Addressing a press conference, Khurda SP Amitabh Thakur said that the police also arrested Sanjay Hati, who claimed to be the victim’s brother-in-law, for his dubious role in the whole episode.
“From preliminary investigation it appears that the victim’s brother-in-law, who is suspected to be trafficking in girls, hatched the plot. The accused persons are known to him,” Mr. Thakur said. The investigation also established that six persons were present when the girl was gangraped.
