NEW DELHI: The Delhi Jal Board will now be able to take action against those who steal water. At a meeting of the Board chaired by the Chief Minister on Friday the proposal to enforce a penalty levied by special magistrates against those who are caught stealing water instead of seeking a legal connection was passed. The DJB had mooted the proposal where special magistrates, acting on written complaints will levy a fine of up to Rs.1,000 for stealing water. Nod for de-silting workThe Board also cleared the award of work for de-silting of the West Delhi Trunk Sewer. The 34.5 km trunk sewer has been heavily silted and awaiting work, though the clearance for the project came way back in December 2005. Work for the Rs.370 crore project will be awarded in six separate packages. Bill payment kiosksDJB officials said the Board has also approved of the proposal to set up anytime bill payment kiosks at 12 locations across the city. Consumers will be able to pay their bills in cash or cheques at these kiosks and instead of having to go to Jal Board offices. Work related to the refurbishing of the Chandni Chowk sewer that was laid more than 60 years ago and the rebate scheme for consumers to clear their outstanding dues were also cleared at the meeting. Consumers can avail themselves of the rebate scheme till March 31, 2008.
