Kakinada: English was once a ‘hated language’ in India because people thought it was thrust upon them. Today, India owes its predominant status in the global job market to the English language proficiency of its younger generation. Here are two children who have obtained grades 9 and 10 in the Graded Examination in Spoken English (GESE) conducted by the world famous Trinity College, London, in association with Orient Longman. Saibhya Prasad and M.L. Hymavati of Subha Niketan School, Kakinada, secured the 9th and 10th grades respectively in the GESE conducted recently. They have not only secured high grades but have also been selected to feature in a documentary film to be made by Trinity College to promote its English language examinations. Taking pride in their achievement, Subha Niketan principal V. Subhashini said 34 students of her school were examined by Ralph Collis, member of the Trinity’s ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) panel and teacher-trainer at the Sheffield Hallam University. The GESE was held at Subha Niketan on December 11 and 12 for the second time after 2006. It requires the students to make oral presentations on topics of their choice and also interact with the examiner(s) on prescribed contents for a stipulated time. The students’ command over English language and knowledge in the topics selected by them are tested at the same time.
