Government to examine increase in milk price

Special Correspondent

KMF has not consulted us, says Governor

Five drinking water projects in the State approved

Panel to study rehabilitation package in flood-affected districts

BANGALORE: The State Government has decided to examine the Karnataka Milk Federation’s decision to increase the price of milk.

The price of Nandini milk has gone up by Rs. 2 a litre with effect from Thursday. Curd has become costlier by Rs. 2 for half a litre.

KMF Managing Director I.R. Ramalinge Gowda had announced the price increase on Wednesday to sustain the dairy industry and ensure a fair price to dairy farmers.

Replying to a question after the Executive Committee meeting, Governor Rameshwar Thakur said: “We will look into the matter. KMF officials have not consulted with us.”

P.P. Prabhu, Adviser to the Governor and who is also handling the Animal Husbandry Department, would examine on what grounds KMF had increased the price, Mr. Thakur said.

Drinking water projects

The meeting chaired by the Governor has approved five drinking water projects in the State. The projects would be implemented in Kadur (Rs. 36 crore), Wadi (Rs. 12.5 crore), Sedam (Rs. 9.11 crore), Kushatagi (Rs. 6.75 crore) and Somwarpet (Rs. 6.10 crore).

The Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board will execute projects in the next 18 to 24 months, S. Krishna Kumar, Adviser to the Governor, said in the presence of Mr. Thakur.

A decision had been taken to establish an agricultural market complex in Mandya at an estimated cost of Rs. 5.12 crore. A Rs. 7.49-crore underground drainage project has been approved for Ramadurga taluk, Mr. Kumar said.

Rehabilitation

The Executive Committee has decided to constitute a high-power committee headed by Mr. Prabhu to study the rehabilitation and resettlement package in flood affected districts of Bagalkot, Dharwad and Gadag.

The committee would visit flood affected villages and prepare a plan in 15 days and submit to the Government, the Governor said.

The Government would mobilise resources from different sources to implement the rehabilitation and resettlement plan from January.

Funds from the Centre and the public would also be sought to execute the plan, the Governor said.

The decision to send the team was taken following the visit of a seven-member official team of the Centre to Gadag and Dharwad districts on Wednesday and Thursday.

Crops affeted

Chief Secretary P.B. Mahishi said the three districts received flash floods in September and claimed lives of 12 persons. Infrastructure in 198 villages was affected and standing crops on 88,998 hectares of land damaged owing to rains.

The State Government has disbursed Rs. 117 crore in the form of compensation to the affected families. However, no compensation was given for crop loss, Mr. Mahishi added.
