Telugu students’ killing a “home invasion”

HYDERABAD: Two Telugu students - Chandrasekhar Reddy Komma and Kiran Kumar Allam - who went to make big in the US were found shot dead on the Louisiana State University (LSU) campus on Friday morning India time. The students were pursuing their Ph.D. at LSU.

The homicides occurred at the Edward Gay Apartments adjacent to the LSU Band practice field, according to news posted on the LSU website. They were discovered after a call to campus police around 10.30 p.m. on Thursday (US time) seeking medical attention.

The LSU Media Relations representative, Kristine Calongne, called the killings a “home invasion.” Both men had apparently been shot once in the head. Chandrasekhar was bound with a computer cable, while Kiran was found near the door. He said the call to 911 was made by Kiran’s wife, who returned home and found the men dead.

Kiran Kumar is the son of noted poet and writer Allam Rajaiah who works for ACC in Mancherial. He is married to a software professional and the couple are expecting their first child in a few months. Kiran completed M.Sc (Chemistry) from Anwar-ul-uloom College in the city and moved to LSU four years ago for pursuing Ph.D in organic chemistry.Incidentally, Kiran’s mother is on a visit to the US and is staying with her daughters. “He was an ambitious student and wanted to make it big in life,” his uncle and senior journalist Allam Narayana told The Hindu.

Local newspapers reported that the shootings occurred as students were wrapping up final exams. The apartments where the two men lived are located on the edge of the campus and are designated for graduate and married students. University police are currently working on the case with assistance from the Baton Rouge Police but no suspects have been identified.
