ALAPPUZHA: The former Health Minister, R. Ramachandran Nair, passed away at a private hospital in Kochi at 2.30 a.m. on Friday following age-related ailments. He was 76. Mr. Nair handled the Health and Devaswom portfolios in K. Karunakaran’s Cabinet from 1991. Born in Chengannur, Mr. Nair was elected to the Assembly from Aranmula in Pathanamthitta district. He is survived by his wife Vanajakshi Amma and a son, Dileep. He will be given a funeral with police honours at Parumala in Pathanamthitta at 3 p.m. tomorrow. The Government has declared a holiday tomorrow for offices under the Health and Devaswom departments as a mark of respect to the memory of the departed leader.
