There will be segregation at the source of garbage Door-to-door collection policy will be adopted NEW DELHI: Mayor Arti Mehra on Friday unveiled the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s master plan for management of solid waste, introducing a holistic approach to make the Capital an eco-friendly and world-class city. Presenting the plan before Lieutenant-Governor Tejender Khanna, Ms. Mehra said the plan tackled all aspects of sanitation including garbage collection, segregation, storage, transportation, processing, and disposal. “An assessment of available and required manpower and machinery has been made in the plan. The administrative system of environment management services has also been assessed and the Master Plan will soon be implemented.” Mentioning the highlights of the plan, the Mayor informed that the attendance of “safai karamcharis” would be noted through a biometric system to avoid absenteeism. There would be segregation at the source of garbage and door-to-door collection policy will be adopted. “A decentralised local composting facility will bypass transportation problems and mechanical sweepers would be deployed for sweeping roads. There will also be proper management of horticulture waste and anti-littering fine would be strictly enforced.” In the proposed system, households will have two garbage bins-- one each for bio-degradable and non-biodegradable waste—and the scheme will be monitored by residents’ welfare associations. From residences, garbage will be transported in two-bin rickshaws to the integrated treatment and disposal facility. “This system will result in phasing out of “dhalaos”,” she added. As per the new plan, new sanitary landfill sites will be developed at Jaitpur and Narela-Bawana Road. These landfills will have a processing capacity of 1,000 metric tons per day and would be engineered in such a manner to ensure the maintenance of potable water in surrounding areas. The Lieutenant-Governor while appreciating the Master Plan commended the civic body for preparing its policy on garbage disposal within the stipulated time-frame. “There is visible change in Delhi on the sanitation front. The number of complaints with regard to sanitation and garbage issues have also reduced,” he said.
