The Power Minister inaugurates Power Asia exhibition at Pragati Maidan

A number of MoUs have been signed for setting up power plants in and around the city

Execution of the MoUs will increase the power generation of Delhi by 2,000 MW in 2010

NEW DELHI: Delhi Power Minister A. K. Walia on Friday said the Capital would become a power surplus State by 2010 as a number of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) have been signed for setting up power plants in and around the city.

Speaking at the inauguration of the three-day exhibition, Power Asia, at Pragati Maidan here, Dr. Walia said the execution of the MoUs on ground will increase the power generation capacity of Delhi by 2,000 MW in 2010.

The Minister added that handing over power distribution to private companies has been an excellent success story as it had not only improved the power situation to the satisfaction of the common man but also helped the Government in saving financial resources.

“Earlier, the Government used to give budgetary support of nearly Rs.1,000 crore to the erstwhile Delhi Vidyut Board which had accumulated a liability of Rs.23,000 crore. The money released from that front is now being used in social sectors and development of infrastructure,” said Dr. Walia.

The Power Minister added that the Government was emphasising a lot on making the people aware about conserving energy. He announced that an award function would be held on Sunday where Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit would give away prizes to individuals, organisations and institutions that excel in energy conservation.

Dr. Walia further added that the Government had already made it mandatory to have CFL bulbs installed in all its buildings. It has also been appealing to the people to save on power by using CFL bulbs. A government spokesperson said several power devices and power saving solutions are on display at the “Power Asia” exhibition.
