‘State Govt. did not ask for stay on CBI probe’

Special Correspondent

West Bengal clarifies on SC order regarding Nandigram killings

Kolkata: “It may be clarified that the State did not pray for stay of investigations by the CBI at the present stage,” said State’s Advocate General Balai Roy on Friday. Mr. Roy was referring to the order relating to the Nandigram incident of the Supreme Court on Thursday, “different versions of which had appeared in several newspapers” necessitating a clarification from his end. The apex court, by an interim order, had restrained the CBI from initiating criminal proceedings in any court against the West Bengal police personnel in connection with the March 14 firing.

For providing compensation to the victims, the State had requested the Supreme Court for a direction so that the names of persons who had died in the police firing and those injured or raped may be ascertained, Mr. Roy added. He said that the State had never sought any blanket stay as regards payment of compensation.

He also clarified that the State had never expressed its unwillingness to comply with the order of the Supreme Court. If there was any difficulty in implementing the order the State would request for clarifications, not for the staying of the order, Mr. Roy emphasised.
