Trade training, a boon to students

C. Jaishankar

RAMANATHAPURAM: Even as the Government is contemplating some changes to ensure proper implementation of the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA), the vocational training programme being implemented under the scheme has proved to be a success.

It is a platform created to help girls studying in middle schools selected for the vocational programme to awaken their full potential. The students, who attended a 10-day training programme conducted in 99 schools of the district, now know the techniques to make some day-to-day usable goods.

Things they learnt

Though the duration of the training was very short, it was enough for the enthusiastic students to know the basic techniques in pot painting, making wire baskets, novel greeting cards made with discarded eggs shells, pulses and rice flakes, clay models, sari-painting, intricate embroidery on handkerchiefs, wall hangings, making of chalks, candles, among others.

It was also an occasion to break away from the routine classes and infuse fresh thoughts and perspectives. “It is certainly a useful programme for earning additional income, at least in the future. It has also raised the confidence among us,” said K. Syed Sulphat and I. Arockia Pindusi, students of Holy Cross Higher Secondary School, Thankatchimadam in Rameswaram island.

Anita Motha, Headmistress, is of the view that more number of students should be trained to make them spend their leisure time in constructive ways.

A. Pakkirisamy, Chief Educational Officer, SSA, and R. Suresh Kumar, Assistant Deputy Programme Coordinator (in-charge) said that the programme was conducted in 99 schools in 11 blocks of the district. Each school was given Rs.5,000. Of this, Rs.3,000 was for procuring materials used to give training and Rs.1,000 for giving refreshment to the participants. More than 3,000 students participated in the programme.

Collector R. Kirlosh Kumar, said the programme would be extended to other schools in the next phase. More girls would be imparted the vocational training. Importance would be given to students from rural areas.
