MADURAI: The Ministry of Science and Technology will organise ‘India Science Festival’ in February with various programmes on popularisation of science across the country and to highlight the achievements.

During the week-long festival, various themes would be emphasised with a particular focus on Planet Earth so as to create larger public awareness, Manoj Patairiya, Director, National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), said here on Thursday.

Talking to The Hindu, he said that 2008 would be observed as Year of Planet Earth for which the preparatory exercise had been completed.

Silver jubilee year

“This year is the silver jubilee year for the NCSTC. Various initiatives are taken to create interest and awareness among the younger generation on science subjects,” Dr. Patairiya said.

Referring to the ‘Science Express’ was flagged off by the PM, he said that the train was set to cover 52 destinations taking out a purposeful journey. He was in the city to participate in a State-level workshop on ‘science popularisation through digital media’ being organised by the Yadava College in association with the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the NCSTC.

Stating that the council was effectively using mass media and folk media to impart scientific awareness and temperament among youngsters, Dr. Patairiya said that science communication covered many issues, including energy crisis, environment protection and water scarcity.

“We also have a programme to encourage innovation through the Japan International Institution of Innovation and Invention. Shortly, we will invite applications from students in the age group of 6 to 19 years to submit their projects and ideas,” he said.

According to him, there is a need to empower people with ability to take informed/rational decisions in day-to-day life.
