MADURAI: They act in short films but carry a message that go a long way in alerting the public on important issues: environment protection and HIV /AIDS prevention.
Two short films of 25-minute duration on how everyone in society should play a role in sanitation and cleanliness and have a check on prevention of HIV are the samples of creation by participants in a State-level workshop on ‘Science popularisation through digital media’ organised by the Yadava College here.
The participants, who cast in the short films on Thursday, were mostly college students from different places in the State, including Madurai Kamaraj University.
The workshop (from December 10 to 16), sponsored by the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), has created a forum for participants to realise the importance of science in everyday life and learn film production/animation in science subjects. “Around 70 youngsters are benefiting from this workshop.,” said P.S. Navaraj, principal coordinator of the workshop.
The shooting of the short film on HIV (titled ‘Puthiya Jathagam’) was done at a natural location in Tiruppalai in which the message was that a HIV test should be done before one’s marriage in the interest of bride and bridegroom and their families. It conveys the point that usual practice of asking for the girl’s horoscope should be replaced by the girl’s family asking for the boy’s HIV test report.
Similarly, the other film (titled ‘Vision for the Visionless’) carries a message of how a visually impaired person removes litter on road with help of his white cane while the normal people just go by without caring.
The two films produced by the workshop participants will be screened on December 16, according to Dr. Navaraj.
According to Manoj Patairiya, Director of NCSTC, who witnessed the film shoot at the location, said that the objective of these workshops was to create a rational thinking and science-orientation among youngsters.
