CHENNAI: Two construction workers were killed and at least six others suffered multiple injuries when a speeding car ran over them while they were asleep on the pavement along New Avadi Road around 2.30 a.m. on Thursday.
Most of the injured belong to Tiruvannamalai district and were employed as casual labourers at construction sites in and around Kilpauk and Anna Nagar areas, police said. Preliminary inquiries revealed that the car first hit a two-wheeler rider Vanchinathan (28) of Kilpauk. A priest by profession, he was proceeding to perform a house-warming ceremony. He was injured and admitted to hospital. After hitting the two-wheeler, the car driver lost control and the vehicle ran over the workers on the pavement near the Kilpauk overhead tank area before coming to a halt. Fearing trouble, the driver fled the scene. According to some of the injured, a woman, Muniamma (45), died on the spot. Another person, Natarajan (46), who was trapped under the car, was rushed to the Government General Hospital where he died a few hours later.
The injured included Padavettan (50), Appan (29), Dakshinamurthy (42), Chinnaponnu (40) and Rajesh (24).
