AGP MLA shot at

Guwahati: Unidentified gunmen shot at the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) legislator from Sotia constituency, Padma Hazarika, in northern Assam’s Sontipur district late on Thursday night.

The assailants also lobbed a grenade on his vehicle in which it caught fire and was damaged.

Mr Hazarika sustained bullet wound on his arm and splinter injuries on abdomen and other parts of the body. He was rushed to Army Hospital at Tezpur and his condition was stated to be stable.

The incident sparked off an angry protest by Hazarika’s followers on Friday who staged road blockade in his constituency demanding stern punishment to the assailants.

AGP leader hurt

In another incident, senior AGP leader and former Union Minister Birendra Prasad Baishya was injured in a road mishap at Silchang under Nelli outpost in Morigaon district while he was on his way to Tezpur to inquire about the health condition of Mr Hazarika.

Mr Baishya was rushed back to the city and admitted in a private hospital. His condition was stated to be out of danger.

Two persons, who were coming in an indica car died on the spot after it collided head on with the vehicle in which Mr Baishya and four others were travelling. Other occupants of the two vehicles also sustained injuries.

Additional Superintendent of Police, Sonitpur district, Ranjan Bhuyan said that the assailants who had come on foot shot at the AGP MLA at Hazarimal, about one km off from his residence around 11.55 p.m. in the night and fled the scene on a motorbike.

The assailants had fired 14 rounds during the attack. Mr Hazarika had left behind his personal security officer (PSO).
