‘Report on Gujjar status ready’

Special Correspondent

Justice Jasraj Chopra Committee was set up six months back

JAIPUR: Even as the social and political circles here got increasingly nervous about the outcome, the Justice Jasraj Chopra Committee, which looked into the claims of the Gujjar community to be part of the Scheduled Tribes in the State, on Friday completed the work on its report. The Committee’s tenure, extended for three months on September 15, is to end on Saturday.

The sources at the office of the three-member Chopra Committee indicated that the report was ready for submission.

For this the Committee has been given an appointment with Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje at 5 p.m on Saturday.

“We would submit it to the Chief Minister only and no one else,” Justice Chopra said.

“Final touches to the report are being given. As such the report is ready,” Justice Chopra told journalists, as he got ready for the verdict on the demand, which had found Rajasthan in flames seven months back. The report, made after the Committee’s visit to as many as 147 villages and surveying of the life of Gujjars in 400 another habitations, contains more than 100 pages.

It is being pointed out that this was for the first time a committee of this kind and with a task of this magnitude is submitting the report in just six months. The Gujjar groups have been threatening with intensifying the agitation if the report is delayed beyond December 15. On the other hand the Scheduled Tribe Meenas on Thursday issued a fresh warning to the State Government asking not to grant ST status to the Gujjars.
