THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A high-level delegation from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has shortlisted a petrochemical and refinery project and a thermal power project, establishment of a financial centre and road development projects for investment in Kerala. The delegation, led by Secretary (Finance and Industry) of the UAE government Younis Haji Al Khoori, held discussions with Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, Industries Minister Elamaram Karim and officials here on Friday and decided to conduct feasibility studies with a view to signing memoranda of understanding (MoU) on the projects by February. Addressing a press conference later, the Industries Minister said the petrochemical and refinery project was proposed to be located near the Azheekal port in Kannur or in Kasaragod district. The power project was proposed for north Kerala. It would be either coal or gas-based. Proposals for road development would cover construction of flyovers on major roads. Kochi will be the location for the financial centre. The site and character of the centre would be decided later. Mr. Karim said the UAE government was willing to associate with the newly formed IT infrastructure company of the State government. “We will discuss the details later and come to an agreement.” Mr. Khoori said the pace of implementation of the proposals would depend upon the feasibility. The size of investment was to be worked out.
