Rs.15 lakh spent in putting up posters and display boards

THANJAVUR: State Information Commissioner R. Rathinasamy on Thursday said efforts were on to create awareness on the Right to Information Act 2005.
The Tamil Nadu State Information Commission spent Rs.15 lakh in putting up posters and display boards on the salient features of the Act and exhibiting them at district collectorates, taluk offices and ration shops in villages, he told presspersons here.
The Commission, an independent body, received 40,000 petitions in the last two years. Action was initiated on the petitions that deserved intervention. Verdict was given in 1,643 cases.
Mr. Rathinasamy said the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) had claimed that it would not reveal certain information. But the information panel had rejected the TNPSC claim, saying that under the Act it should share information with the public. There was a case in court in this connection.
He said government department officials could share information as available in the file. But they could not give information to the satisfaction of the consumers.
The Commission received the maximum number of petitions related to education, followed by police, revenue and health. Petitions on the functioning of primary agriculture co-operative banks in villages also came in large numbers. The panel lent a helping hand to the people in getting pension, ration cards and pattas.
