Corrections and clarifications

  • In a report “Qadhafi, a difficult guest for France” (“International” page, December 13, 2007), the second paragraph was: “‘We, President Sarkozy and I, did speak about those subjects,’ Mr. Qadhafi said when asked if the French President had rapped him on the knuckles for Libya’s dismal human rights record.” The sentence should have been “‘We, President Sarkozy and I, did not speak about those subjects,’ Mr. Qadhafi said ….”

  • In the lead story “Contempt notice to Modi” (December 13, 2007, page 1), the sixth paragraph was: “Additional Solicitor-General Gopal Subramaniam, who is assisting the court as amicus curiae, said: ‘Mr. Modi’s speech is prima facie a complete interference with the process of justice ….’” A reader said it should have been “amicus curia”, where curia is singular and curie is plural. “Amicus curiae” is right. The plural is “amici”, and therefore “amici curiae”. (It means an impartial adviser to a court of law in a particular case. Derived from modern Latin, it literally means “friend”, and in full, “friend of the court”.

  • In a report “Homage to martyrs in Parliament attack” (December 14, 2007), the caption of the accompanying photograph was “Remembering Heroes: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pays homage to those killed in the Parliament attack of 2001 … Vimla Devi, wife of ASI Nanak Chand, who was killed in the attack, complains about non-receipt of relief to Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil”. The text gave her name as Ganga Devi. The detail in the text is right. (The Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr. Murli Deora, has also issued a clarification to say that “It is ascertained that the person’s name is Smt. Ganga Devi and not Smt. Vimla Devi … The retail outlet (RO) allotted to Smt. Ganga Devi, w/o Late Shri Nanak Chand was commissioned on 25.1.07.”
