Mumbai in command

Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM: Mumbai gained complete control of the semifinal match against Karnataka in the all-India under-22 tournament for the Col. C.K. Nayudu trophy at the Railway stadium on the penultimate day of the match on Friday.

First, a 99-run stand between Ahmed Nizam and Omkar for the ninth wicket helped it gain an 84-run lead and later Mumbai had Karnataka struggling at 164 for seven in its second innings.

Mumbai resuming at 267 for six added 109 runs on the third day. It lost two quick wickets early on but Ahmed Nizam (54, 2x4, 3x6) and Omkar (48 n.o., 6x4) put the Karnataka bowlers at bay and helped the team gain the all-important lead.

Karnataka, which rallied well both in the quarterfinals and also in the South Zone tournament held earlier, failed to repeat the same in this match. Anup Revankar and Siddharth Chitnis claimed two wickets each for Mumbai, which is likely to win the match outright on the final day.

Delhi, facing a huge first innings total of 594 scored by Maharashtra at the Port stadium is 239 for four. Rahul Dewan completed a century (125, 18x4) and has so far added 67 runs for the fifth wicket with Ankur Julka (24). The only other major contribution came from Raman Sachdeva (30).

The scores: Maharashtra 594 vs. Delhi 239 for four in 94 overs (Rahul Dewan 125 batting).

Karnataka 292 and 164 for seven in 36.3 overs vs. Mumbai 376 in 134.3 overs (Aditya Tare 73, Sarvesh Damley 70, Ahmed Nizam 54, Omkar 48 n.o., Anup Revankar 48).
