Loss of livelihood: A vendor relates her plight following a raid by the city Corporation to remove unauthorised bunks near Museum junction in the city on Friday. -

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Officials of the city Corporation on Friday raided hotels, canteens and other eateries in the Medical College area and seized stale food unfit for consumption.

Corporation secretary Johnson K.George said the stale food was seized from Bhadra Hotel, Hotel Radhakrishna, Hotel Saraswathi Bhavan, Palmland Restaurant, Annam Family Restaurant, the canteen attached to the office of the Medical College Superintendent and the staff canteen, Hotel Saravan Bhavan at Murinjapalam and City Bar.

The stale food was later destroyed.

Health Inspector T.Alexander and Junior Health Inspectors S.S. Meenu and G.Unni led the raid.

Another team of officials removed 11 unauthorised bunks from the road near the museum police station.

Most of the bunks were eateries selling tea and snacks to the tourists visiting the Museum and Kanakakunnu Palace. The officials were accompanied by a police team.

Without notice

Many of the vendors including women were in tears as the shops were dismantled and taken away in Corporation trucks.

“They have destroyed our livelihood. We could at least have salvaged our utensils and structures if they had given us a day’s notice before removing the shops,” a woman running one of the shops said.

Corporation Health Officer D.Sreekumar termed the raid a routine operation.

He said the shops were removed because they were unauthorised structures posing inconvenience to pedestrians and motorists.
