HYDERABAD: Fulfilling a long-pending demand from a cross-section of people, Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy announced here on Friday that Nellore district would be named after Potti Sreeramulu, who sacrificed his life demanding a separate State for the Telugus. The announcement came a day ahead of the 55th death anniversary of ‘Amarajeevi’ on December 15 after the Chief Minister discussed the issue with elected representatives and senior officials. The district will hereafter be called “Amarajeevi Potti Sreeramulu district”. The new name will be adopted at a ceremony to be organised after formal approval of the decision by the Union Government. Dr. Reddy recalled that Sreeramulu had launched his historic fast-unto-death at Madras on October 19, 1952, demanding Andhra State. Mahatma Gandhi once remarked: “I would have achieved freedom for the country in one year if there had been at least 10 leaders like Potti Sreeramulu with me.”
