Relief package for acid victims : court’s fiat to officials

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Friday termed as vague and not comprehensive some of the provisions and conditions in the relief package that the State Government had framed for victims of acid attacks in Karnataka.

A Division Bench, comprising Justice S.R. Bannurmath and Justice Subash B. Adi, perused a report on the package and pointed out that some of the contents were not clear and needed to be suitably corrected. The Bench is monitoring the relief and rehabilitation scheme for women victims of acid attacks. It had on an earlier occasion asked the State Government to come up with a comprehensive scheme to rehabilitate acid attack victims.

When the matter came up, the government advocate said he had filed a draft of the revised package which the court had sought for in its last hearing. He said the State had now set aside Rs. 2 lakh as expenses for the victims to undergo plastic surgery.

The Bench directed the government advocate to ensure that the Secretary, Department of Social Welfare, and other officials concerned were present at the next date of hearing. It said it could direct the officials to clear the confusion in the package. The Bench adjourned further hearing on the case.
