PMK cadres stage demonstration

TAMBARAM: Members of the Pattali Makkal Katchi staged a demonstration in Tambaram on Friday, urging the State Government to improve facilities in government hospitals, primary health centres and maternity hospitals in rural areas.

During the protest held near the Tambaram Taluk Office, members of the Kancheepuram district (West) unit of the party said healthcare facilities were inadequate in rural areas near Chennai.

There were more than 50 villages in the southern suburbs of Chennai alone, the partymen said, adding that residents of several areas were victims of insect and snake bites and there were hardly any facilities to provide treatment to the affected people. Shortage of equipment, doctors and paramedical staff in maternity centres in many areas left poor women at the mercy of private hospitals, they said. The attention and priority given to massive infrastructure projects was not extended to healthcare, especially rural areas, the partymen added. — Special Correspondent
