JOINT RESPONSIBILITY: Judge V. Ramamurthy speaking at a workshop on child rights in Tiruchi on Friday.
TIRUCHI: Protecting the rights of children was a joint responsibility of parents, teachers and the State, said V. Ramamurthy, I Additional District and Sessions Judge, here on Friday.
Mr. Ramamurthy called for adequate training for teachers to help them uphold the rights of children. Since teachers played a vital role in shaping up children as responsible citizens, the rights of teachers should also be protected, he said inaugurating a workshop on Child Rights at Holy Cross College.
Principal of Holy Cross College Sr. Sarguna Mary said the rights of children were being neglected in the era of globalisation. Punishment meted out to discipline children would only have a negative impact, as they were susceptible to depression. They could also tend to resort violence when they grow up.
S. Martin, advocate, spoke on the rights of children guaranteed by the Constitution and the U.N. Convention on Rights of the Child.
Chief Educational Officer K. Swaminathan, chief guest at the valediction, emphasised on value-based education. Enacting laws would not be enough to protect the rights of children. There was a need for attitudinal change.
