Water supply for rabi to be streamlined

Special Correspondent

Irrigation officials to implement ‘rotation system’

Chief engineer’s office shifted to Karimnagar for water management

Water to be provided for 8 lakh acres during rabi under Sriramsagar

HYDERABAD: The government has finalised an action plan to ensure equitable supply of available water to the districts and regions during the rabi season to address grievances of discrimination in distribution of water.

Farmers in Warangal district that lies at the tail-end of the Kakatiya canal of Sriramsagar project are agitated that most water is going to the head-reaches in Karimnagar and Nizamabad districts. Those in Khammam and Krishna districts are aggrieved that water is not reaching them in sufficient quantity as Nalgonda district is claiming a lions’s share from the Nagarjunsagar Left Canal. The action plan, which was announced here on Friday by Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah will allow irrigation officials to implement ‘rotation system’ to ensure just distribution of waters to all districts/ regions. Officials have been asked to conduct field level meetings with farmers wherever necessary to avoid disputes. As part of the action plan, office of Chief Engineer Sriramagar, has been temporarily shifted from Hyderabad to Karimnagar to ensure better water management and regularly monitor the situation. Mr Lakshmaiah said water would be provided to eight lakh acres during rabi under Sriramsagar. Farmers in Nellore and Chittoor districts are better placed during this rabi as Somasila as well as Kandaleru projects are almost full. For the first time, full level impounding has been made in Somasila after acquisition of lands in Kadapa district.
