Tirunelveli
Towering: The palmyra leaf tower erected for the DMK youth wing conference in Tirunelveli. TIRUNELVELI: Tirunelveli is getting ready to host the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s first-ever youth wing conference to be held on December 15 and 16. All roads leading to the Tirunelveli Medical College ground are dotted with DMK flags, festoons, banners, huge flex boards, 85-feet tall illuminated towers and arches in attractive shapes, lending a festive atmosphere to Palayamkottai. The air-conditioned dais comprises four rooms. A 950 feet long and 450 feet wide pandal has been aesthetically decorated with imported artificial flowers, velvet screens from Jaipur and a colourful entrance made of Palmyra leaf and plaster of paris , designed by art director J.P. Krishna. HighlightsLed by the deputy general secretary of the party and Minister for Local Administration M.K. Stalin, youth wing cadres will start their march from VOC Grounds, Palayamkottai, towards the venue on the afternoon of December 15th. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and general secretary K. Anbazhagan will inspect the rally from a stage near the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital, which has been designed like the famous Thiruvarur car. Another highlight of the opening day will be the ‘Kaaviya Kalaignar 84’, a sound and light show depicting episodes in the life of Mr. Karunanidhi. After Mr. Stalin delivers his presidential address on the second day of the conclave, resolutions will be passed. Around 28 speakers have been allotted time, including party MP and Mr. Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi, who will speak on the ‘Role of the DMK in women development and empowerment’. Following the general secretary’s address, Mr. Karunanidhi would address party cadres at around 9 p.m. The battered roads of Palayamkottai, which remained unnoticed for the past several months , have been re-laid for the conference. A strong police force, comprising four Deputy Inspector Generals of Police, 25 Superintendents of Police and 6,500 policemen, would be deployed during the conference.
