Karunuday, Tanvi in final

Special Correspondent

MUMBAI: Tanvi Shah focussed on keeping the ball in play and waiting for Olga Blank to force the pace. The patient Indian picked up enough points off the sixth seeded Israeli for a 6-3, 6-0 semifinal victory in the girls singles competition at the MSLTA-ITF Junior Tennis 2007 here on Friday.

Second seed Aliev Angelika sustained Israeli presence in the event by defeating local challenger Reshmi Teltumbde in straight sets.

Top seed Karunuday Singh kept faith in attacking instincts against fourth seeded James Richardson, playing smart at the net for a 6-2, 6-4 win in the boys singles’ semifinals.

The Indian retained control in both sets, going 4-2 up in the first and raising the level of his game in the hotly-contested second. Riccardo Sinicropi, surviving two three-setters enroute to the boys semifinal, forced his way into the final thwarting Lewis Barnes 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 over 96 minutes.

The unseeded Italian, in the news for verbal volleys at match officials, led 3-0 in the first but allowed his British opponent to catch up in the eight game and wrest the set.

Riccardo fought his way into the final, overcoming starting trouble to win the next two sets.

The results (semifinals):

Boys singles: Karunuday Singh (India) bt James Richardson (GBr) 6-2, 6-4; Riccardo Sinicropi (Italy) bt Lewis Barnes (GBr) 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Girls singles: Aliev Angelika (Isr) bt Reshmi Teltumbde (Ind) 6-0, 6-4; Tanvi Shah (Ind) bt Olga Blank (Isr) 6-3, 6-0.
