NAGAPATTINAM: Women in the tsunami-hit villages are now keen in improving their economic condition by starting several new income generating business with the assistance and support extended by the Development Promotion Group, a Chennai-based NGO. One of the programmes of the DPG was to restore the livelihood of the tsunami-hit women, said R. Bhakther Solomon, Chief Executive Officer of the DPG, at Vizhundamavadi coastal village in the district on Thursday. Addressing a community development meeting, Mr Bhakther Solomon said that a women empowerment project, ‘Rose Malar Women’s Federation’, with the partnership of 13 NGOs in Tamil Nadu had contributed to the development of 2,349 SHGs with 35,948 members. These SHGs have saved Rs.1.12 crore and made an internal lending of Rs.4.06 crore and accessed to the tune of Rs.1.78 crore through various banks as linkage fund to take up socio-economic activities to improve their lives. A garment manufacturing training centre, a livelihood revival programme for tsunami victims, was established at Velankanni in the district jointly by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), Bangkok and the DPG. Under the programme, training was given to 35 to 40 affected girls or women in garment manufacturing. The DPG identified a private company and shall establish in consultation with UNESCAP, a garment production unit under the public-private partnership scheme. This unit would jointly be owned, managed and administered by a newly established private company along with the community with the back-up support from DPG and UNESCAP.
