Katpadi-Villupuram conversion to be delayed
Special Correspondent
TIRUVANNAMALAI: The completion of the Rs.231.72-crore gauge conversion work on the Katpadi-Villupuram metre gauge line, including the works on various intermediary sections such as Katpadi-Vellore Cantonment and Vellore Cantonment- Tiruvannamalai will be slightly delayed in view of the design modifications of some bridges en route and the slow-down of the work on account of the reluctance of the contractors to continue the work in the light of the escalation in the cost of raw materials, according to the Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu.
He was talking to reporters after inspecting the construction of a 9-span railway bridge across the Cheyyar at Karayambadi near Kalasapakkam in Tiruvannamalai district on Saturday.
Change in design
Mr. Velu said that owing to the need to change the design of the bridge across the Naganadhi near the Kannamangalam Railway Station, the work on that bridge was yet to start. However, the work on the bridge across the Padavettar has commenced. “I have asked the authorities to strengthen the workforce to speed up the work so that the work on the Vellore Cantonment-Tiruvannamalai section is completed before June or July next as against the scheduled completion in April 2008,” he said.
